Department of Financial Management

The Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce (FMSC) at the University of Jaffna was established on 29th May 1999 as the university’s fifth faculty, offering Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) and Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree programs. FMSC was the sixth faculty among the management faculties of state universities in Sri Lanka. Under the BCom program, specializations in Accounting and Marketing were offered, while the BBA program provided specializations in Financial Management and Human Resource Management. Both degree programs were offered in Tamil and English.

In November 2008, the Faculty underwent a significant restructuring process, which was approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC). As a result, the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) became the sole program offered by the Faculty. To reflect this change, the existing departments were reorganized into four distinct entities: Accounting, Financial Management, Human Resource Management, and Marketing. Each department began offering specialized BBA degrees in their respective areas.
Financial management plays a pivotal role in driving the global economy, focusing on the efficient management of funds across personal, corporate, and public sectors. The study of financial management dates back to ancient civilizations, where the effective management of financial resources was essential for survival and prosperity. In Sri Lanka, the demand for financial studies has been driven by several factors, including the increasing need for finance professionals, the limited availability of finance programs, and the growing requirement for research and consultancy services in the field.
The Department of Financial Management was established on 15th October 2010, as one of the four departments in the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, following the restructuring of the Faculty. The Department offers the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) Honours in Financial Management program, which focuses on key areas such as corporate finance, investments and portfolio management, financial markets and institutions, and bank management.
The department’s primary mission is to produce finance-literate, high-caliber graduates who are proficient in financial market activities and adept at making informed financing decisions in both corporate and societal contexts. Graduates of the department enjoy excellent career prospects, with two primary career paths recognized in the market. The first is in Managerial Finance, which involves overseeing finance functions for businesses in sectors such as manufacturing and trade. The second path leads to careers in the financial services industry, including banking, securities and investments, microfinance, small and medium enterprises, real estate, and insurance.
