Introduction to the Department of Financial Management
The Department of Financial Management is one of the most prominent departments in the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, University of Jaffna which offers the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Financial Management (Special)degree programme. The degree programme is basically focused on the subject areas of corporate finance, investments, financial markets and institutions. The primary focus of the department is to produce finance literate high quality graduates who are professionally fluent in financial market activities and other financing decisions in corporate environment and social environment. Department of Financial Management was established on 15th October 2011, as one of the four departments in the Faculty of Management studies and Commerce after the implementation of restructuring of the faculty. The curriculum of the Department is designed to prepare students to take leadership roles in the corporate world and to make them sensitive to ethical and social issues and adaptable in the dynamic business environment. It gives students a solid foundation in theory of finance and developing managerial competencies for betterment of the society.
The degree programme has been designed to produce graduates in Finance with necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes who are capable enough in meeting the challenges in growing financial and capital markets. The programme of studies consists of a carefully integrated combination of subjects in the key areas of Corporate Finance, Investments, Portfolio Management, International Financial Management, etc. The Department is also comprises of rich blend of intellectuals who deliver high-quality and challenging courses. The Department of Financial Management offers inter disciplinary courses for the benefit of the students from other faculties and offer services to other departments by taking lectures in certain courses such as Project Management, Entrepreneurial Finance, and Financial Management in other faculties / units. Our students of the department have excellent career prospects where there are two basic career paths acknowledged in the market. The first is Managerial Finance, which involves managing finance function for businesses in the manufacturing and trade industries while the second is careers in the financial services industry, such as Banking, Securities, Micro finance, Small and medium scale enterprises, Real estate, and Insurance industry which creates and sells financial products or services.
